GOLDEN
WEDDING. 1913 John Barbour and Annie Simpson m 25th November 1863
On
Saturday two very old residents of Bald
Hills--- Mr. and Mrs. Barbour celebrated
their golden wedding (writes our Bald
Hills correspondent).
The occasion was
marked by a large gathering of friends at the
residence of Mr. W. Barbour, their
eldest
son. Mr. Barbour arrived in Queensland
nearly 52 years ago, and Mrs. Barbour
came to
the colony in the ill-fated Fiery Star, on
that vessel's last voyage out.
On
Saturday a large marquee had been erected,
in which all sorts of home-made delicacies
were served. About 60 guests were
present. The centre of the table was
ornamented by a beautiful three-tier
wedding
cake, the work of Mrs. W. Barbour,
and flowers and ferns completed the
decorations. After the toast of "The King."
Mr. A. McPherson proposed the health of
the guests of honour, and many
complimentary
remarks were made as to their
sterling qualities, their hospitality, and the
good work accomplished by them as
pioneers in the Pine district. Mr. Barbour
suitably responded.
After the usual toasts
had been honoured the evening was spent
very pleasantly in dancing and
games,
interspersed with songs and recitations.
Many handsome remembrances of the
occasion were received. All of Mr. and Mrs.
Barbour's descendants, with the exception
of two grandsons, were present.
William was living in the Pine River District. Jane died 1929

(Another person named John Barbour died 1894)
Mr. John Barbour, whose death took place on February 19, at the age of 84 years, was one of the oldest residents of the Bald Hills district. He arrived in Brisbane in the Hellenlea in 1861, and
shortly afterwards moved to Bald Hills, where he had resided ever since. A few years ago, Mr. and Mrs. Barbour celebrated their golden wedding. The deceased is survived by his wife and four
sons, William and Alex., of Sandgate ;John and James, of Bald Hills. Hii only daughter, Mrs. Jamieson, predeceased him.

Hope Deferred.—One John Barbour, having migrated from a remote district in the
Lammermoors, where he had been an elder and pillar of the Auld Kirk, to a small town
in the Lothians which shall be nameless, had the praiseworthy desire to fill the same position
in course of time in his now home. The elders there, however, were all men of substance, portly alike in person and purse, whereas John was of rather a meagre habit of body, and only moderately endowed financially. As year after year passed away, and his ecclesiastical promotion was as far off
as ever, John was secretly very much disappointed, and on one occasion, when an intimate acquaintance put the question to him,
"Johnny, hey they no putten ye on the eldership, yet?" he sourly replied, "No, no; they put the elders on by weigh here. Yo've nae chance here unless ye're aboot sixteen stone."
Simpsons and Millers also arrived on the Helenslea!
